Morne Diablotin Park

Morne Diablotin Park

Formerly one of the most predominant sites for Maroon (runaway slaves) camps due to it's rugged terrain, the Morne Diablotin National Park is situated at the Northern end of the island and as the name suggests is the location of the 4,747 foot Morne Diablotin - Dominica's tallest mountain.  Six Maroon camps have been know to exist in the national park: Cicero, Juba, Pharcel, Robin, Clemence and Quashie - all named after their courageous leaders.  The first recorded ascent of Morne Diablotin in 1867 was made by Dr. John Imray, a scotish physician.  The mountain was later ascended by Prince Albert and Prince George in 1880.  Apart from its historic significance the park is perhaps more famously know for its exotic collage of fauna and flora as it is home to the Sisserou and Jaco Parrots and many other species of wildlife, trees and plants.
